Somewhere in your muscle memory is a crosswalk. You did not choose it. A grid appeared, a traffic light flickered across four squares, and you clicked — unpaid, unthanked, unaware that you were annotating a training set that would one day make the question unnecessary.^[1]

The captcha was a beautiful scam: a proof of humanity whose answers were harvested to build the thing that would defeat the proof. Every bicycle you identified made the machines better at bicycles. You were not the customer or the product. You were the curriculum.

The new gates

Now the grids are fading — not because humanity won, but because the test got too easy for the students. The replacements are behavioral: how you move the mouse, how you hesitate, the particular human sloppiness of your scrolling. You are still performing your humanity for a machine. The machine just stopped showing you the worksheet.^[2]

There is no call to action here. You will click the crosswalks for as long as the crosswalks exist, because the crosswalk is standing between you and your boarding pass. Just know, the next time a grid dissolves into nine little storefronts, what you are looking at: the last public monument to free labor, rendered in 300-pixel squares.
